Soap Cycling is grateful for the support of the Hong Kong Jockey Club Charities Trust. Under the project “Start with Soap” funded by the Trust, today we are glad to start the global trip journey with the enthusiastic local youths to the Iloilo, the Philippines.
The trip is one of the activities of the youth development programme. It provides a platform for local youths to learn and collaborate with people of different nationalities to expand their exposure to developing countries while making a positive impact on the enhancement of diversity, equity, and inclusion. They will work with the local Soap Cycling teams to further their efforts in their Soap Cycling operation, including providing support of operations, marketing, fundraising, and research.
As of 2022, the Philippine Statistics Authority has set the poverty threshold at PHP12,030 per month for a family of five, or PHP79 per day per person to spend on food and non-food requirements. However, a soap bar there will always cost between PHP40 and PHP50. Among families, the first semester 2023 poverty incidence was estimated at 16.4 percent, which was equivalent to 4.51 million poor families.
In Iloilo where Soap Cycling Philippines is located, we distribute the reprocessed bar soap collected from hotels to the remote schools and disadvantaged communities. On the soap recycling platform, we mobilize interns, students, local community partners, and youths from Hong Kong to enhance social inclusion.
