The scale of the challenge
Assuming that each hotel room is only refurbished with 1 soap (40 grams) and 3 bottles, a staggering 370.26 tonnes of soap & 27,769,500 bottles of shampoo, shower gel, and conditioner are needed to replenish the hotel rooms.
Short stays in hotels, a lifetime in the landfill
Have you thought about how much of the soap and the liquids you actually use during a stay? Everything else goes to the landfill. The plastics usually cannot be recycled because they are still too full for processing. Additionally, caps, bottles, and print labels are usually made from different types of plastic, further complicating the recycling process.

Working with Soap Cycling allows hotels to avoid this unnecessary waste and allows us to turn trash into a valuable resource to bring hygiene to all who need it. Thus, the recycling program is at the core of every Soap Cycling’s chapters operations. Through this program, Soap Cycling teams go beyond collecting the soaps: we research #zerowaste alternatives together, partner to run fundraisers, and run trainings for hotel staff.

In 2018, Soap Cycling Hong Kong started working on creating a globally-focused network to help the hospitality industry on its journey to becoming a force for sustainability and inclusive growth benefiting the local communities.
